It’s a model that’s been at the heart of Kia’s transition from a budget brand to a mainstream and increasingly more premium business, with many Sportage buyers being loyal to the model across the generations.

But across those years, its mix of practicality and value for money has always remained and ensured the Sportage has always proven a popular choice with families.

Why buy a used Sportage?

Popularity is always a good judge of how good or bad a car is, and given the Kia Sportage is one of the UK’s best-selling new cars – and Kia’s most popular – it certainly bodes well for this model.

It’s the perfect size for a family crossover – not being too large in terms of dimensions, but still having a roomy interior crammed with cubby holes and a large boot that can accommodate everything you could possibly want.

If you like the feeling of getting plenty of value for your money, you’ll love the Sportage, too, with even the lowest spec models of the current generation getting a reversing camera, alloy wheels and a touchscreen media system that also boasts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This lets you mirror your screen and its apps safely onto the main display. Here’s a short history of the Kia Sportage, dating right back to 1993, when this Kia was first launched.

Kia launched its Sportage in Asia in 1993, with the model being introduced to Europe two years later – debuting with a range of petrol and diesel engines and four-wheel-drive options.
By 2005, Kia introduced a new second-generation Sportage, boasting a far more modern design and higher-quality interior, with sales soaring for this version.
In 2011 the Sportage really moved into popular crossover territory with the third-generation model – this model really appealing to the family car market
For 2015, Kia launched a far more modern fourth-generation Sportage – boasting a more upmarket design and plenty more in the way of technology.
In 2018, the Sportage was facelifted, with key changes including a redesigned front end and new mild-hybrid diesel engines.

What should I look for when buying a used Sportage?

Satellite navigation system can occasionally fail, so check if it's working as intended.
Diesel engines are fitted with a diesel particulate filter, which can become clogged if models aren’t driven for substantial distance. Be cautious with very low-mileage diesels as a DPF can be expensive to replace.
As with any family-aimed model, inspect for any damage – such as scuffed interior plastics and door dings.
Leather seats are known to damage easily, so check for any rips and tears.
